As anglers, we’re fortunate to spend time in some incredible natural environments. With that opportunity comes a responsibility to protect the places we enjoy.
Environmental stewardship has always been an important part of The Mindful Angler. I believe we should leave every fishing spot in better condition than we found it.
The seven Leave No Trace principles provide a great foundation for doing exactly that.
The Seven Leave No Trace Principles
1. Plan Ahead and Prepare
Know the regulations, weather conditions, and accessibility of your fishing location. Bring the equipment and supplies needed to enjoy your session safely and responsibly.
2. Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces
Use established paths and fishing areas whenever possible. Avoid damaging vegetation, disturbing sensitive habitats, or creating unnecessary new trails.
3. Dispose of Waste Properly
Take home everything you bring, including food packaging, bait containers, and discarded fishing line. If you come across garbage left by others, consider collecting that too.
4. Leave What You Find
Respect the natural environment. Avoid disturbing plants, rocks, wildlife habitats, and other natural features so future visitors can enjoy them as well.
5. Minimize Campfire Impacts
Follow local fire regulations and use designated fire areas where permitted. Never leave a fire unattended, and ensure it is completely extinguished before leaving.
6. Respect Wildlife
Observe wildlife from a distance and avoid disturbing nesting or feeding areas. Handle fish responsibly, use appropriate fish-care equipment, and return them to the water safely.
7. Be Considerate of Others
Respect fellow anglers, nearby residents, and everyone sharing the outdoors. Keep noise reasonable, maintain a clean fishing area, and leave room for others to enjoy the experience.
The Canadian Carp Society Leave No Trace Garbage Drive
One initiative I’m particularly proud of is the ongoing Leave No Trace Garbage Drive, which I started with the support of the Canadian Carp Society.
The idea is simple: encourage anglers to collect garbage while they’re out fishing and help protect the waterways and shorelines we all enjoy.
Whether it’s a single piece of litter or an entire bag of garbage, every effort makes a difference.
It’s also an opportunity to lead by example and encourage the next generation of anglers to respect the environment.
A Little Fishing Karma
I’ve always believed in fishing karma.
Over the years, I’ve made a habit of cleaning up garbage around my fishing spots, even when it wasn’t mine.
On more than one occasion, I’ve finished cleaning a shoreline only to have one of my rods take off shortly afterward. One particularly memorable experience involved landing a beautiful mirror carp almost immediately after collecting garbage.
Whether others believe in karma or not, I certainly do!
But regardless of whether the fish cooperate, there’s always satisfaction in knowing you’ve left a place cleaner than you found it.
Every Little Bit Helps
Protecting our waterways doesn’t require a massive cleanup effort. Small actions, repeated by many anglers, can make a meaningful difference.
The next time you’re fishing, consider bringing an extra garbage bag.
Leave your fishing spot better than you found it.
- Plan Ahead and Prepare encourages anglers to research fishing regulations, obtain necessary permits, and equip themselves with proper gear to ensure a safe and responsible outing.
- Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces resonates with anglers, urging them to stick to established trails and fishing spots to prevent erosion and habitat disturbance.
- Dispose of Waste Properly emphasizes the importance of properly disposing of fishing line, bait containers, and other waste to prevent pollution and protect wildlife.
- Leave What You Find encourages fishermen to leave natural objects undisturbed and resist the temptation to remove rocks, plants, or other features from aquatic environments.
- Minimize Campfire Impacts promotes fire safety and responsible behavior in shared outdoor spaces.
- Respect Wildlife urges anglers to maintain a respectful distance from wildlife habitats and avoid disturbing nesting sites or spawning grounds.
- Be Considerate of Other Visitors reminds anglers to maintain a quiet and respectful demeanor, especially in crowded fishing spots, to preserve the serenity of the natural surroundings.
The importance of the Leave No Trace principles cannot be overstated, especially for anglers who cherish the natural beauty of Canada’s waters. Witnessing garbage at fishing spots has long been a source of frustration for me. Inspired by a true fishing ambassador and steward of the environment, I felt compelled to take action. With the support of the Canadian Carp Society (CCS), I initiated the CCS Leave No Trace Garbage Drive, aiming to raise awareness among our core team and beyond. This platform provided by CCS has been invaluable in promoting such a crucial cause. I firmly believe that through education, engagement, and leading by example, we can be catalysts for change and make a positive impact for generations to come.
