LEAVE NO TRACE

“Leave No Trace” can have several meanings depending on the context in which it’s used. When it comes to the environment, it refers to a set of ethics promoting conservation of the outdoors. In Canada the 7 principles of Leave No Trace and how they apply to fishing are as follows:

  1. Plan Ahead and Prepare encourages anglers to research fishing regulations, obtain necessary permits, and equip themselves with proper gear to ensure a safe and responsible outing.
  2. Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces resonates with anglers, urging them to stick to established trails and fishing spots to prevent erosion and habitat disturbance.
  3. Dispose of Waste Properly emphasizes the importance of properly disposing of fishing line, bait containers, and other waste to prevent pollution and protect wildlife.
  4. Leave What You Find encourages fishermen to leave natural objects undisturbed and resist the temptation to remove rocks, plants, or other features from aquatic environments.
  5. Minimize Campfire Impacts promotes fire safety and responsible behavior in shared outdoor spaces.
  6. Respect Wildlife urges anglers to maintain a respectful distance from wildlife habitats and avoid disturbing nesting sites or spawning grounds.
  7. Be Considerate of Other Visitors reminds anglers to maintain a quiet and respectful demeanor, especially in crowded fishing spots, to preserve the serenity of the natural surroundings.

The importance of the Leave No Trace principles cannot be overstated, especially for anglers who cherish the natural beauty of Canada’s waters. Witnessing garbage at fishing spots has long been a source of frustration for me. Inspired by a true fishing ambassador and steward of the environment, I felt compelled to take action. With the support of the Canadian Carp Society (CCS), I initiated the CCS Leave No Trace Garbage Drive, aiming to raise awareness among our core team and beyond. This platform provided by CCS has been invaluable in promoting such a crucial cause. I firmly believe that through education, engagement, and leading by example, we can be catalysts for change and make a positive impact for generations to come.
